Eminent Film Director Jamil Guliyev
Azerbaijan's renowned film director, Jamil Elshad oghlu Guliyev, was born in Baku on July 3, 1963. He graduated from the directing faculty of the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography in Moscow in 1984, mentored by People's Artists of the USSR Alexander Alov and Vladimir Naumov. That same year, Jamil Guliyev began his professional career at the "Azerbaijanfilm" studio, where he gained recognition for the documentary and feature films he directed, both in Azerbaijan and on the international stage. His works have been showcased at festivals in France, Sweden, Turkey, Russia, Georgia, the Czech Republic, Romania, and other countries, receiving high praise.
In addition to his work as a director, Jamil Guliyev has successfully pursued a career in education for many years. He began teaching at the Azerbaijan State University of Culture and Arts in 1987. From 1998 to 2006, he led the "Film and Television Arts" department at the same university and continues his work there as a professor.
Jamil Guliyev's multifaceted career has also encompassed leadership and managerial roles. From 2000 to 2005, he served as the director of the International Audiovisual Festival, followed by his position as the director of the Azerbaijan State Film Fund from 2006 to 2013. Additionally, he held the role of general director of the "Madaniyyat" channel from 2011 to 2013. Furthermore, from 2013 to 2018, he took on the significant responsibility of general director at the Public Television and Radio Broadcasting Company.
From 2018 to 2019, he served as the head of the sector in the Cinematography Department of the Ministry of Culture. From 2019 to 2020, he was the director of the "Azerbaijanfilm" film studio.
Jamil Guliyev is an active member of several international organizations. Since 1990, he has been a member of the International Cinematography Confederation, and since 1996, he has been part of the Azerbaijan Union of Journalists. In 2010, he became a member and academician of the International Academy of Television and Radio. He joined the International Council of Museums (ICOM) in 2009. He became a member of the Board of Directors of the Film Directors Guild in 2024, followed by his election as the Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Cinema Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan in 2025.
Jamil Guliyev's extensive contributions have been recognized at the state level numerous times. In 1998, he received the "Humay" award, followed by the honorary title of "Honored Art Worker of Azerbaijan" in 2005. In 2010, he was awarded the "Zirva" prize. In 2013, he obtained the title of "Honorary Cultural Worker." In August 2018, he was awarded the 3rd degree Order "For Services to the Fatherland" for his contributions to the development of Azerbaijani cinema. Additionally, he received the Presidential Award consecutively in 2019, 2020, and 2021.
The renowned director is the author of notable films such as "March," "Fish Day," "Rain on the Holiday," "Moving," "This is Also a Pattern," "Boring Story," "Robbery," and several other intriguing works.
Jamil Guliyev is the author of screen works and an intellectual figure who has made systematic and creative contributions to the development of Azerbaijani cinema and played a significant role in training professional talent in this field.
