The book “Gedichte” (“Poems”) is a poetic collection by the prominent German poetess Johanna Ambrosius, published in Königsberg in 1895 in the German language. This is the sixth edition of the collection, prepared by the editor Karl Schrattenbach, which indicates the wide popularity of her work. The publication is elegantly designed: on the title page there is a portrait of the poetess and an engraving of her native home, emphasizing the autobiographical nature and emotional sincerity of the poems. Ambrosius’s poetry is imbued with lyricism, heartfelt emotions, and love for her homeland. The seemingly simple form of her verses conceals a deep content, reflecting the inner world of a person closely connected to nature and everyday life. The artistic decoration with floral ornamentation and picturesque miniature on the cover gives the book a special aesthetic value. Today, this edition is preserved in the Rare Book Collection of the Presidential Library of Azerbaijan as an important monument of the German-language poetic tradition and book art of the late 19th century.
